Multispec: Multimodal Spectroscopic Investigation for inline determination of cell viability

The scope of this project is to find strategies for a knowledge based production of biopharmaceuticals. In biotechnological production the implementation of spectroscopic monitoring systems is particularly difficult due to low concentrations of the analytes and the water matrix. Moreover the size, aggregation and morphology of the cells influence the scattering characteristics and therefore the optical path length is continuously altered.

To overcome these problems the cultivation of Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells is used as a model system. The partners are working on innovative algorithms and probe designs.

The project focuses on the inline determination of cell viability and comprehensive description of the overall cultivation system. The goal is the development of Low Cost – High Performance sensors that are capable of multiplexing in reusable and single-use bioreactor systems.
